USDT TRC-20 fee explained: energy, bandwidth and why it costs 6 or 13 TRX

People search for the USDT TRC-20 fee and get one number. In reality a transfer on TRON has no fixed price. It depends on how much energy the transfer needs, on the price of that energy, on the price of TRX and, surprisingly, on whether the receiving address already holds USDT.

Energy and bandwidth

TRON charges for two resources. Bandwidth pays for the size of the transaction in bytes, and a USDT transfer needs a few hundred units of it. Energy pays for running the token contract. If your account has no staked or rented energy, the network burns TRX to cover the missing amount.

Why a new address costs about twice as much

A transfer to an address that already holds USDT needs roughly 65,000 energy. A transfer to an address that has never held USDT has to create a new storage slot and needs roughly 130,000. At an energy price of about 100 sun per unit, which is the level at the time of writing, that is about 6.4 TRX plus bandwidth in the first case and about 13 TRX plus bandwidth in the second. At a TRX price of 0.35 USD that is roughly 2.5 USD and 4.8 USD.

What changes the number

• The energy price is set by the network and can change. Always check the current one.
• The TRX price moves the dollar cost up and down even when the TRX amount is the same.
• Staking TRX or renting energy lowers the burn, which is why heavy senders pay far less than occasional ones.
• Exchanges and wallets often show a rounded or averaged figure, so the same transfer can look cheaper or dearer depending on where you send it from.

What this means for merchants

On a large payment the network cost is a rounding error. On a small ticket it can be a visible share of the price, which is why a gateway has to show it before the customer pays and why you should offer a cheap network next to TRON.
